Cosmetic Dentistry

By: Greg Culver

Cosmetic dentistry is fast becoming very popular as people strive to improve their outward appearance. There are many reasons why people want cosmetic dentistry. Some simply want to look younger, while others feel self conscious about their teeth and choose to do something about it. What cosmetic surgery does do now is offer people a variety of procedures that are all designed to improve a person's teeth.

Some of the more common procedures include:
1. tooth whitening/bleaching
2. bonding
3. porcelain veneers
4. braces
5. gum lifts
6. tooth shaping.

Depending on the type of procedure you are considering, you can expect to pay varying amounts. For example, a tooth whitening procedure completed at home by yourself will attract a much cheaper fee than porcelain veneers which cost thousands of dollars.

Before choosing a cosmetic dentist you should carefully consider the following points:
1. Is the dentist experienced in this type of work?
2. Have you seen evidence of his/her work that is, photos.
3. Have you seen testimonials in the surgery from satisfied customers?
4. Does the dentist have imaging devices to assist with the demonstration of how the procedure is done?
5. Have you discussed with the dentist the results that might be expected from the procedure.the

Tip: Under no circumstances should you consider going overseas to a third world country
to get any of the above procedures done. Not only will you be wasting your money,
but the treatment you get may not be up to standard, causing more problems later on.

Many practitioners in this field consider cosmetic dentistry to be an art form, combining many of the above procedures to get the final result that a patient is looking for. Great expertise and ongoing study and training is necessary so that high skill levels in this cosmetic field can be maintained. Remember that if you are not happy with first cosmetic dentist you come across, get a second opinion. This will give you greater confidence in your final decision.
